Legal coaching is a newer type of legal service that helps people get the guidance, support, and confidence they need to handle their own legal issues. It gives them a better understanding of their rights and options, making it easier to make smart decisions and effectively advocate for what they want. This approach is known as limited-scope legal service, where a lawyer-coach (or paralegal) offers advice and guidance, while the client represents themselves in court and manages their own legal matters.
Jo-Anne Stark, who founded and leads the Legal Coaches Association and created the Certified Legal Coaches program, explained it like this: Hiring a full-service lawyer is like buying a plane ticket and letting the lawyer pilot you to your destination. Hiring a legal coach, on the other hand, is like flying your own plane with a lawyer acting as Air Traffic Control.
Why go for legal coaching?
It keeps costs down. In many cases, clients can do a lot of the work themselves with professional guidance to keep them on track. While it’s not suitable for every person or every legal problem, it’s a great alternative to full-service representation for many cost-conscious clients.
Legal coaching is particularly effective for small claims, some family court cases, tribunal hearings, and other dispute resolution proceedings. It’s also a good fit for drafting simple legal documents such as basic wills, contracts, and applications.
Legal coaching is all about giving clients the tools and confidence to handle their own legal issues, with a bit of professional guidance. It’s a cost-effective way to make legal help more accessible.
I’m excited to take this journey towards a more client-centered approach to law. Whether you’re a legal professional looking to try something new or someone who needs affordable legal help, let’s work together to change the game.
